July 3rd & 4th - 1998
Cape Lookout, Outer Banks, North Carolina
Cape Lookout is named after the lighthouse which is pretty much the only feature of this section of the Outer Banks. There is a military base a few miles to the South, but there isn't much to see there.

We had to catch a ride out to the island. The are no roads connecting the mainland to the isle. It is possible to get a vehicle over to the isle, but there isn't much to do with it once you get there.

     1. Ceci & Alex on the ride over.
     2. From afar, the lighthouse stands out.
     3. The ranger station at the base of the lighthouse.
     4. The walkway from the landing site to the station. (Dave, Kathy, & Alex)
     5. The Stars & Stripes flying on one side of the lighthouse.
     6. From our campsite. We crossed over the strip of land and camped on the ocean.

Camp Site Camp Fire      The campsite. It was nice, warm, and sandy. Sleeping directly on the beach is not a good idea. Sand fleas suck. And if you have a tent, make sure that you seal it at all times. Not easy to do with the heat. Oh, and if you want to have breakfast, don't leave it within easy reach of the local fauna. Waking up and not having food is about the same as waking up itching from sand fleas...

BOOM!
Or at least a fizzle.
We celebrated Independence Day a little early with some fireworks. Thought I'd share a few of the explosions.

And this is what it is all about. The sunrise (minus the sand fleas) was beautiful. It isn't everyday that you can wake up and just see straight out for hundreds of miles without something blocking your view.
