March 5th - 11th - 1999
Tampa, Port St. Lucie, Orlando, Florida
Spring Break '99. I didn't get a Spring Break last year. Then again, I didn't have classes last year. Fair trade.

Jeff drove down to Raleigh on Thursday and joined me for a lovely TKD class. (Note the sarcasm.) Friday morning, we took off for Tampa. Long drive. Jeff amused us us by trying to get a date with every cute girl we passed on the way. (Not that many opportunities, but it was still funny. Well, THEY thought it was funny.) We almost had lunch dates, but they were with another group and not willing to drop out just for the sake of having lunch. Once we entered Florida, Jeff took over driving and we made it into Tampa in record time. Well, we would have, if I hadn't taken us through Lake City. (Nice place to leave!)

I've been to Tampa before, about 3 years ago. My friend Roger, who was also my first mentor at my first co-op job, lives in Tampa. I guess he's been there for a little over 3 years. On Saturday, Jeff and I went sailing with Roger and his friend Karen. Our destination? Beer can island. When we started, there was no wind so we had to motor most of the way. It picked up after that and we were able to bring out the sails and catch the breeze. We had a great time. Thanks, Roger!

After sailing and dining, we crashed for the night. Amazing how laying around on a boat all day under the sun can make you tired. We got up slowly on Sunday morning and took off for our next destination...

Nettles Island
Port St. Lucie. Smaller town on the East side of Florida, almost directly opposite Tampa. Jeff's Grandma and Pa live here in a community on a small man-made island called Nettles Island. We spent five days with them and some of Jeff's cousins and their friends. It isn't much of a college crowd hangout, but it was a great place to stay and relax. For details of out stay, check out the Labrecque - Florida page. (Linked from my main page or the menu.)

On Tuesday morning, Jeff and I got up at the crack of dawn to hit the beach and take some pictures of the sunrise. Reminds me of the Outer Banks trip...

Yes, there's quite a few here... I like variety.

Some of the native life we encountered on the trip. The manatee loves cold, fresh water coming out of the tap. This one swam up to dock and started rolling around in the water coming out of the hose. Large, but slow, they can't move out of the way of boats in time to avoid getting hit. Hanging around the docks can be hazardous to anyone's health.

Dolphins are by far the coolest aquatic animals. Playful and friendly, these were seen on the way from the canal to the ocean. We tried to bring the boat closer, but they easily out-distanced us. Better luck next time.

Zooot a'lu! I have missed one!
